How Young is Too Young?

Criticism on cosmetic surgery is gradually diminish as time passes. Cosmetic surgery or so called plastic surgery is nothing new, nothing shocking, but teen plastic surgery --- that's more controversial.

Plastic surgery in young age now raised an issue. The patient of plastic surgery has becoming younger and younger. Although people think that the trend of plastic surgery shouldn't involve young kids, but there's many acceptable reasons which make teens want plastic surgery. Plastic surgery in teen can be due to issues like bullying, self confidence or health conditions. Personally, i would say that plastic surgery isn't wrong for teens as this can be beneficial to them. Some cases shown that people who changed their appearance through plastic surgery can eventually rebuild their confidence level.

Teens expect that plastic surgery will improve their self-confidence, but does it? "There are no empirical studies examining the long term benefits among adolescents," says DIANA ZUCKERMAN. As teen mature, their body image has a potential to improve to how they desire. However, for child who has deformed body image since born basically unable to correct the physical distortion without a surgery. Those who undergoes plastic surgery attempts to combat unhealthy issue should not be opposed as this is an option to limit their psychological scarring.

Melissa Rudy clarified that we definitely don't mean breast enhancements for 10-year-old. Dr. Steven Pearlman says, “The ideal age (for otoplasty) is about six years old. The ear is 90 percent of adult size, so we can operate successfully and a child is old enough to understand why the operation is important.” Plastic surgery can be a minor change which is definitely safe for young children. An accurate judgement by a surgeon to determine whether a teen is appropriate for plastic surgery must be made before the surgery. Moreover, underage child should acquire their parents' consent or permission before undergoing plastic surgery.

On the other hand, changing one's appearance should be personal decision. "It's all about what makes you feel good. It's nobody business," says Lisa Rinna, an American actress. There is no wrong or right when it doesn't give impact on others. Plastic surgery helps those patients to live a better life. If you think it makes you feel good, do it without hesitation. The decision is on your own, is your right.

In conclusion, plastic surgery shouldn't have age limits. However, one should understand the risk and consequences of this changing process before he makes a final decision. Underage teens's decision must be acknowledged by their parents to avoid inappropriate consideration. Besides, physicians should warn their patients regarding the risk of performing plastic surgery on immature bodies and also the resulting effects.
